Billionaire Richard Branson Found Treasure: Even Branson says he can't believe buried treasure find

On the eve of April Fools' Day, billionaire Richard Branson is featured in a “leaked” video that purports to show him digging up buried treasure on the British Virgin Islands.
In what could be Branson's "most exciting find," or simply an excuse to show off his acting chops, the Virgin Group founder is incredulous when he hears that a work crew had stumbled across a wooden chest buried suspiciously close to the shoreline.

The video posted on the Virgin blog and on Branson's social media accounts was supposedly filmed by the British Virgin Islands Department of Antiquities. It’s even watermarked with "Property of the Virgin Islands Government."

It begins with Branson briefly commenting about tree-planting on the exclusive Moskito Island, where the billionaire owns a sprawling luxury estate, before he's interrupted by a woman who whispers something in his ear.

Branson responds to the news, saying, "sounds like a wind-up, but let's have a look."

The camera then follows Branson who comments about the pristine islands’ history of pirates as he digs up the discovery. A glimmer of something golden can be seen from the edge of the wooden crate.

At that point, Branson suggests turning the camera off.

Here's the footage.

"If you don't mind though, that footage, I'd rather you didn't show that to anybody," he says.
In a blog post dated March 31, Branson said the secret footage was "somehow… leaked online."

While the footage has now been shared thousands of times, many are speculating that it's an early April Fool’s Day prank, including historian Angus Konstam, who’s authored a number of books about pirates.

“Pirates didn’t bury treasure,” Konstam told CTVNews.ca in an email on Thursday. “That came from the imagination of Robert Louis Stevenson when he wrote “Treasure Island.”

Konstam also noted that it’s unlikely a wooden chest would remain perfectly preserved buried on a beach for three centuries.

“I can pretty much guarantee it’s a joke,” he said.

Now the British Virgin Islands government has released a statement. Dr. Kedrick Pickering, Deputy Premier of the Virgin Islands, said: “This could be probably the largest find of treasure in the BVI, probably throughout the entire Caribbean, ever! I can only hope that the treasure will be used to support the people of the British Virgin Islands and their overall development and the betterment of the country. But of course, knowing Sir Richard as I do, I would expect nothing less. I would expect he will do all in his power to ensure this is used for the benefit of the British Virgin Islands.”

Governor of the BVI John Duncan has now also posted his video response to the find.
