Viking gold, a 16th Century ring, and a rude knife handle are among county's amazing treasure finds
Wide open fields and regular ploughing means that Lincolnshire is ranked as the fourth best place for treasure hunting in England.
Amazing finds by metal detectorists in recent years include a hoard of medieval coins found by North Somercotes resident Tom Redmayne, and the county's only gold 'Thor's Hammer' Viking pendant, discovered by Devin Wormsley, from Spilsby.
Philip Ingram-Jannetta, from Leasingham, discovered a 16th Century ring bearing the initials of wealthy landowner John Shaw in a field near Sleaford, and Keith Kelway, from Wellingore, found Roman brooches, rings and coins in Wickenby.
Mr Wormsley, 45, who lives at Eastville, near Spilsby, said the appeal of metal detecting is that you never know what you might find.
"I've had a metal detector for the past 15 years but when I lived in Nottingham I didn't get very far because the whole place in under concrete," he said.
"I moved to Lincolnshire in 2009 and I would say it's the number one place in England for finds.
"When harvest time comes you can be out every weekend and because of ploughing you never really have to dig down further than 6cm.
"I've even seen old coins on the surface of the soil.
"The machines we have help you find the good stuff and not the rubbish, but you still end up finding horseshoes because you never quite know what you have until you dig.
"The other week I got a 10th Century styrrup mount in bronze depicting a howling beast – it would have been gilded in gold or silver leaf and it just goes to show that back them they liked their bling just as much as we do.
